Brooklyn Neutral
Hilde was not able to locate sufficient high-quality, relevant, and publicly available information about the ingredient safety, sustainability, or accountability efforts at Brooklyn Neutral to indicate that meaningful action on these issues is underway. Work on these issues may be occurring at the company but our research did not readily locate information about it at the time we conducted our review. Our research included but was not limited to reviewing content on webpages, reading company blog posts, looking through FAQs when available, doing sitewide keyword searches, and checking for reports across the website(s) that appear to be owned and operated by the parent company. In instances where the company may provide information about these topics, it was clear that it failed to reflect actions that meet the requirements of any criteria, or it was not relevant to any of the criteria included in our evaluation. Wright's
Wright's is owned by the company Purpose Built Brands. Hilde evaluates parent companies rather than individual brands. Learn more here.
We see some encouraging signs from this company when it comes to ingredient safety in particular. A number of their brands carry products with a safety certification we like in the form of EPA Safer Choice. We appreciate seeing dedicated and publicly available policies on packaging and chemicals, topics that are both highly relevant to the kinds of products the company makes and sells. Sadly, our research did not reveal much info about other areas that matter like protecting our climate, biodiversity, treating people fairly, or sustainability in their supply chain.

Cleaning & Laundry
Aspenclean
The cleaning & laundry product category has some tough competition when it comes to ingredient safety and sustainability. There are a number of companies that score very well on our ratings. Aspen Clean has a decent foundation in place when it comes to ingredient safety. We always like to see an assortment-wide commitment to the EWG Verified certification. But we were confused not to see any of those products listed on the EWG’s online database. If you’re buying exclusively on ingredient safety then this is one to consider. We hope the company will expand their ethical business efforts moving forward.

Personal Care
Tower 28
In the past we’ve seen Tower 28 lumped in with other “clean” marketed beauty brands, which is strange to us now that we’ve had a chance to do some research on the company. We can see how it may be confusing to the average consumer because the company does feature messaging on some of the issues that matter like safety and packaging (aka being “earth sensitive”). Unlike some of the other clean-marketed brands, this company does not appear to use any of the higher-quality certifications we trust. And the lack of information and substantiation on their approach to ingredient safety and sustainability means the company scored poorly on our evaluation criteria.

Our research and evaluation of Chlorox, which owns a handful of cleaning & laundry product brands as well a couple of personal care products brands, turned up some pleasant results. While the company appears to be on par with their competitors in terms of their environmental impact reduction and benefits for people efforts we did find a few important differentiating factors in terms of their ingredient safety work. That extra effort helped move their overall company status up. We hope they will continue to lean into and expand their accountability efforts moving forward.

Tramontina
Tramontina is a large company that makes a diverse range of products that include kitchen products, which are the focus of this evaluation. Despite having a fair amount of information labeled with the right words e.g. “sustainability” it was clear from our research that much of the content lacked substance. We see a wide variety of opportunities for this company to improve across the board and particularly with respect to their ingredient safety efforts. Many of this company’s kitchen products appear to contain PFAS chemicals and the company has recently worked to oppose state policy related to these toxic chemicals in California that would help protect consumers.

Wearever
Wearever is owned by the company Groupe SEB. Hilde evaluates parent companies rather than individual brands. You can read more about why we think this approach is more helpful for consumers on our blog.
Groupe SEB owns a variety of kitchen brands sold in both the U.S. and internationally. We like that a number of the brands owned by the company offer cookware made with materials like stainless steel and cast iron that tend to be safer options for these kinds of products. That said, the company’s unwillingness to phase out fluorinated compounds (e.g. PTFE) from their non-stick products was a major ingredient safety red flag for us. Their poor performance on the ingredient safety portion of our evaluation is the primary reason the company doesn’t get a better overall rating. There were a variety of other elements of their sustainability and accountability efforts that score well for our criteria. We see indicators that the company is making progress on some topics like living wages in their supply chain. If you do decide to purchase products from one of the brands owned by this company like All-Clad, go with the stainless steel options.

We see indicators that the company is making progress on some topics like living wages in their supply chain. If you do decide to purchase products from one of the brands owned by this company like All-Clad, go with the stainless steel options.

Hilde was not able to locate sufficient high-quality, relevant, and publicly available information about the ingredient safety, sustainability, or accountability efforts at The Container Store to indicate that meaningful action on these issues is underway. We hope this company provides greater transparency about these important issues in the future.

In addition to being one the country’s largest retailers, Target has more than 40 owned brands that include nearly every kind of product. For purposes of this evaluation we are only including the home-focused product categories that we prioritize. There is a lot of public information about Target’s ingredient safety, sustainability, and accountability efforts. It took us days to sort through it and score all of the evaluation criteria. Our takeaway: We see some credible evidence that the company takes these topics seriously and is taking meaningful action. You won’t be surprised to hear that we also think the company can and should do more on a couple of areas that matter. Compared to some of the multinational companies who make many brands they sell though, we generally think the products that are part of Target’s portfolio of brands offer better options in terms of ingredient safety and sustainability (and likely affordability as well).

Thuma
Thuma makes furniture with a pleasing minimalist design. And their focus on material durability and circularity is appealing. Our research gave us some indication that there is a desire to credibly pursue ingredient safety and sustainability. But when it came down to finding the kind of substantiation and information we need to score our evaluation, we often came up empty handed. Given the products and claims, we really hope to see more substance from the company when it comes to issues like climate, biodiversity, and social impacts in the future.
Furniture
My Green Mattress
My Green Mattress seems to have a decent start when it comes to ingredient safety. Many of their products carry one of our favorite certifications (Made Safe) and they use some organic raw materials which helps lower the environmental impacts associated with production. Other aspects of their environmental and people efforts seem to be a bit behind their peers. The company’s mission is well suited to strengthening efforts on issues like climate and social impact though. Hopefully we’ll see more from them in the future.
Kitchen
Our Place
Our Place is one of the direct-to-consumer companies using a hybrid type of ceramic nonstick technology for their cookware. Like a few of their competitors, they got a lot of love on the internet for their design but also their ingredient safety claims of being PFAS-free. For a while that seemed like a big step in the right direction. But we still wanted to know what kinds of chemicals were being used to give their products this kind of performance. Unfortunately, the company is unwilling to disclose that information. That’s a big red flag for us. As a result, the company doesn’t score well on our evaluation criteria. Substantiation related to other elements of sustainability and corporate accountability are lacking and we hope to see more transparency from them in the future.

Avocado is one of those brands that is consistently included in those “eco-friendly” bed lists. And for good reason, they appear to be doing some things right when it comes to safety and sustainability. The brand has also expanded into other product categories including apparel and personal care. They provide leadership on issues like climate and have a laundry list of Hilde approved certifications including being a Certified B Corporation. Because they have some good pieces in place we see a great opportunity for this company to take the next step by adopting a context-based approach to sustainability.

Hempel appears to have recently enhanced and expanded their sustainability efforts. We see some solid signs that the company is integrating sustainability into their strategy and operations. They are making some progress on their climate efforts. But the company doesn’t appear to offer much information about ingredient or chemical safety, a topic that is highly relevant given their products. And while the company seems to have real efforts underway on issues related to creating benefits for people we were unable to find the kind of substantiation we need. As a result, they didn’t score particularly well on some of our evaluation criteria in those categories. We did note that they have a rather unique ownership structure, which could allow the company to lean into sustainability in a faster and more effective way than other companies (should they so choose).

We were interested in looking at this company because we noticed a number of their products available at Costco which we find to be more affordable for many products used in the home. In addition to owning a number of well-known brands, Somnigroup also does private label manufacturing for other brands. Overall, this brand appears to be focused on ensuring they are in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Our research found gaps in their approach to ingredient safety as well as benefits for people. But we did note that a few foundational pieces are in place related to reducing environmental impacts. We hope they’ll continue to build on their current efforts and start to tackle more advanced actions, particularly when it comes to protecting our climate and biodiversity.

Spin Master owns many toy brands and appears to produce licensed toys for franchises like Paw Patrol, Gabby’s Dollhouse, and Dora. The company’s approach to ingredient safety and sustainability seems to be driven primarily by regulatory compliance but we did note a few instances where they go beyond those baseline requirements. Given the nature of their products, we would like to see a more precautionary approach to ingredient safety. We also think the company should rapidly accelerate their climate efforts and focus on setting a science-based goal. The company has some compelling brands and licensing agreements that really appeal to kids right now so we hope they’ll strengthen their policies and practices in the near future.
