Coyuchi
Coyuchi appears to be doing a lot of things right based on our research. And they feel confident enough in their efforts to validate them using high quality certifications and external frameworks across a wide variety of issues. We’re particularly impressed with their commitment to Made Safe certification and their long-standing focus on organic and recycled raw materials like cotton. We also see some industry-leading attempts to increase the circularity of their products through a dedicated product recovery program. We’d like to see some credible goals associated with a few of their efforts, including the recovery program and support for regenerative agriculture, along with more information on their people benefits policies and practices.
Personal Care
Crunchi
Crunchi has a good approach to ingredient safety. We like their focus on this important issue and the fact that they have broadly adopted the use of a leading certification in the form of EWG Verified. We also appreciate their efforts to minimize plastic in their packaging and use some organic ingredients. But for a company who emphasizes sustainability in their mission, we found a surprising lack of attention on environmental impact and people benefits during our research. And while it’s not unusual to find a clean beauty company prioritizing ingredient safety, Crunchi performed poorly on all of the other issues included in our evaluation. We hope the company will build on their great ingredient safety efforts moving forward.

Amika
Amika is owned by the private equity firm Bansk Group. Read more about our approach to evaluating these kinds of companies here.
Our initial research into Amika looked promising: A certified B-corp company with some legit climate goal and packaging efforts. But with Hilde evaluations, we go deep AND wide. Sometimes that means a promising company may end up missing the mark on some issues that matter. That’s what happened in this case. Because we prioritize ingredient safety as a critical issue in our company ratings, Amika ended up scoring lower than we expected. We also found some gaps in other areas, particularly when it comes to people benefits and workers in their supply chain. We’ll keep an eye on this one moving forward though and cross our fingers that they catch up to the leaders in their industry.

Albany Park
Albany Park is owned by the company Exemplis. Hilde evaluates parent companies rather than individual brands. Learn more here.
Our evaluation of Exemplis left us scratching our heads. On one hand, the company owns a brand (Sitonit Seating) that seems to have found a niche for commercial customers who are looking to comply with green building standards. The company references that brand’s documentation related to ingredient safety and sustainability. Even the sustainability report referenced on the company website appeared to be for a single brand and not representative of the parent company. Documentation branding aside, a bigger issue for us was that it was unclear the extent to which the efforts that may be underway at this brand were actually being carried out by the parent company and the other brands they control. If they are being applied holistically across all the brands they own, then there would appear to be some initial efforts in place. Hopefully the company will provide clearer communication and better substantiation on their efforts in the future.

Prose Beauty
Every once in a while we come across a company that has some new and novel approaches to addressing the issues that matter from an ethical business perspective. Prose is one of those companies. They have a unique way of disclosing their ingredients that includes hazard scores as well as countries of origin, and they offer an “opt-out” mechanism to reduce packaging waste from plastic pumps. We’d love to see these more broadly adopted by companies in the personal care industry. Being a B-corp also gets out kudos. We’d like to see the company move beyond an offset-driven approach to climate protection and formalize their responsible sourcing practices, among other improvements.

Hilde was not able to locate sufficient high-quality, relevant, and publicly available information about the ingredient safety, sustainability, or accountability efforts at Sundays to indicate that meaningful action on these issues is underway. Work on these issues may be occurring at the company but our research did not readily locate information about it at the time we conducted our review. Our research included but was not limited to reviewing content on webpages, reading company blog posts, looking through FAQs when available, doing sitewide keyword searches, and checking for reports across the website(s) that appear to be owned and operated by the parent company. In instances where the company may provide information about these topics, it was clear that it failed to reflect actions that meet the requirements of any criteria, or it was not relevant to any of the criteria included in our evaluation. We hope this company provides greater transparency about these important issues in the future.

Saatva
We’re concerned about the validity of many of the ingredient safety and sustainability claims made by this company. During our research, we noted several inconsistencies that were major red flags. For example, we found two instances where the company appears to claim their products have certifications (e.g.Cradle to Cradle, Global Organic Textile Standard). A search of the public databases maintained by the certifying organizations, in this case the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute and Global Standard gGmbH did not confirm those certification claims. This is standard practice for Hilde. We attempt to verify with the certifying body itself when a company claims that they and/or their products have received a high-quality certification. Our rating reflects numerous other gaps in their approaches to ingredient safety and sustainability.

We see some encouraging signs from this company when it comes to ingredient safety in particular. A number of their brands carry products with a safety certification we like in the form of EPA Safer Choice. We appreciate seeing dedicated and publicly available policies on packaging and chemicals, topics that are both highly relevant to the kinds of products the company makes and sells. Sadly, our research did not reveal much info about other areas that matter like protecting our climate, biodiversity, treating people fairly, or sustainability in their supply chain.

Sadly, our research did not reveal much info about other areas that matter like protecting our climate, biodiversity, treating people fairly, or sustainability in their supply chain.

Article
Hilde was not able to locate sufficient high-quality, relevant, and publicly available information about the ingredient safety, sustainability, or accountability efforts at Article to indicate that meaningful action on these issues is underway.
Cleaning & Laundry
Aspenclean
The cleaning & laundry product category has some tough competition when it comes to ingredient safety and sustainability. There are a number of companies that score very well on our ratings. Aspen Clean has a decent foundation in place when it comes to ingredient safety. We always like to see an assortment-wide commitment to the EWG Verified certification. But we were confused not to see any of those products listed on the EWG’s online database. If you’re buying exclusively on ingredient safety then this is one to consider. We hope the company will expand their ethical business efforts moving forward.

Personal Care
Tower 28
In the past we’ve seen Tower 28 lumped in with other “clean” marketed beauty brands, which is strange to us now that we’ve had a chance to do some research on the company. We can see how it may be confusing to the average consumer because the company does feature messaging on some of the issues that matter like safety and packaging (aka being “earth sensitive”). Unlike some of the other clean-marketed brands, this company does not appear to use any of the higher-quality certifications we trust. And the lack of information and substantiation on their approach to ingredient safety and sustainability means the company scored poorly on our evaluation criteria.

Our research and evaluation of Chlorox, which owns a handful of cleaning & laundry product brands as well a couple of personal care products brands, turned up some pleasant results. While the company appears to be on par with their competitors in terms of their environmental impact reduction and benefits for people efforts we did find a few important differentiating factors in terms of their ingredient safety work. That extra effort helped move their overall company status up. We hope they will continue to lean into and expand their accountability efforts moving forward.

Tramontina
Tramontina is a large company that makes a diverse range of products that include kitchen products, which are the focus of this evaluation. Despite having a fair amount of information labeled with the right words e.g. “sustainability” it was clear from our research that much of the content lacked substance. We see a wide variety of opportunities for this company to improve across the board and particularly with respect to their ingredient safety efforts. Many of this company’s kitchen products appear to contain PFAS chemicals and the company has recently worked to oppose state policy related to these toxic chemicals in California that would help protect consumers.

Groupe SEB owns a variety of kitchen brands sold in both the U.S. and internationally. We like that a number of the brands owned by the company offer cookware made with materials like stainless steel and cast iron that tend to be safer options for these kinds of products. That said, the company’s unwillingness to phase out fluorinated compounds (e.g. PTFE) from their non-stick products was a major ingredient safety red flag for us. Their poor performance on the ingredient safety portion of our evaluation is the primary reason the company doesn’t get a better overall rating. There were a variety of other elements of their sustainability and accountability efforts that score well for our criteria. We see indicators that the company is making progress on some topics like living wages in their supply chain. If you do decide to purchase products from one of the brands owned by this company like All-Clad, go with the stainless steel options.

Hilde was not able to locate sufficient high-quality, relevant, and publicly available information about the ingredient safety, sustainability, or accountability efforts at The Container Store to indicate that meaningful action on these issues is underway.

In addition to being one the country’s largest retailers, Target has more than 40 owned brands that include nearly every kind of product. For purposes of this evaluation we are only including the home-focused product categories that we prioritize. There is a lot of public information about Target’s ingredient safety, sustainability, and accountability efforts. It took us days to sort through it and score all of the evaluation criteria. Our takeaway: We see some credible evidence that the company takes these topics seriously and is taking meaningful action. You won’t be surprised to hear that we also think the company can and should do more on a couple of areas that matter. Compared to some of the multinational companies who make many brands they sell though, we generally think the products that are part of Target’s portfolio of brands offer better options in terms of ingredient safety and sustainability (and likely affordability as well).
