Seventh Generation is owned by the multinational conglomerate Unilever. Normally we don’t evaluate brands. But we’re making an exception in this case given the legacy of the company when it comes to their long-standing advocacy efforts related to ingredient safety as well as being a founding B-Corp. In fact, a number of years ago (prior to Hilde) we worked directly with the company on legislative campaigns that helped pass news laws making cleaning products safer. While the parent company Unilever stands out on their environmental impact, worker fairness, and corporate accountability efforts, we were disappointed with what we found related to their approach to ingredient safety. In contrast, Seventh Generation appears to take a more precautionary approach to how they select ingredients for their products. We like that they use a more trustworthy certification (Safer Choice) across much of their portfolio of products. Although Seventh Generation is a unique situation given their ownership, we feel comfortable considering their products for use in our homes given their more robust approach to safety. You can see that in some evaluation categories (e.g. worker fairness, accountability), Seventh Generation did not score as well as their parent company. We think that is likely the result of efforts and information about those areas of impact being addressed by Unilever rather than Seventh Generation.
