Evaluation Summary

Company Insights

Cif is owned by the company Unilever. Hilde evaluates and rates parent companies rather than individual brands. Learn why.

Unilever appears to own over 400 brands making it one of the biggest and most diverse portfolios of companies we’ve researched, evaluated, and rated to date. These brands span numerous product categories and are sold around the world. The company’s sustainability-related public disclosures and reporting is one of the most comprehensive and detailed sources of information we’ve found. It took days for us to review for this evaluation. We were disappointed with what we found related to their approach to ingredient safety. We would like to see the company move away from the outdated, compliance-based approach that seems to prioritize risk-based reductions in exposure to chemicals of concern instead of selecting inherently safer ingredients. It’s unfortunate because the company truly stands out on their environmental impact efforts where they achieved one of the highest scores possible. We also find that their practices across many worker fairness and corporate accountability topics are solid and in some cases best-in-class. We may consider specific brands (e.g. Seventh Generation) for our homes that appear to be more proactive on ingredient safety. But until Unilever takes a more precautionary approach they’ll continue to receive an overall rating of Avoid despite very strong performance on the other categories we evaluate.
