Our purpose & values
We value fairness, protecting the vulnerable, and being good stewards

Why did we build Hilde?
If you’re like us, you want to make purchasing decisions that align with your values and budgets.
But you probably have a hard time finding recommendations you trust (and quickly)
As parents - and sustainability professionals we’ve come to the conclusion that none of the current options (sites, apps, etc.) really get it right. We’ve been working on these issues for years and still have to dig around for hours to find out what’s what in terms of ingredients and sustainability.
How many parents do you know that have the time or desire to do that kind of thing? Not many.
But lots of us CARE about the health of our children and the future of life on our planet.
So we decided to take out decades of experience working with companies, NGOs, and government to build a platform that provides comprehensive evaluations
AND (more importantly)
We want to provide you with real opportunities to make a positive impact in ways that go beyond your individual choices and actions.
Our purpose with Hilde is to make it easy for people to support companies that meet the needs of their family, learn about safer products and sustainability, and take meaningful action to help transform our world in ways that protect the health of people and our planet.
If we’re successful, eventually you won’t need Hilde. But until then we’re here to help.
Your purchasing decisions matter - but it's not all on you
Supporting companies that are trying hard to do the right thing is the first step in accelerating change. The immediate benefit it provides is the comfort of knowing that you’re taking a real and immediate step to better protect your family.
But we also know that transforming companies, industries and our economy requires more than just making informed purchases.
In fact, a part of this is about actually making FEWER purchases regardless of how safe or sustainable the company is.
The kind of change our families need also requires us to educate ourselves about the issues (you don’t have to be an expert). And then we need to engage in meaningful advocacy to improve the laws and regulations that define the rules of our economy.
That’s what we need:
- strong demand (from people like you)
- fairer, safer, and more sustainable supply chains operating within planetary boundaries (from businesses)
- and a solid rulebook that protects everyone (from legislators and public agency leaders)
These three things in combination will ultimately put us back on a path that effectively protects our families and the planet for generations to come.
What are our values?
To fulfill our purpose, it is our intention to help people in ways that are most aligned with our values as parents, sustainability professionals, and advocates.
When we think about how we want to operate, here are the ways that we attempt to work and treat people:
Honest
We are mindfully transparent with our thoughts, perspectives, and opinions in support of each other.
Collaborative
We are mentors, partners, connectors, and facilitators so that we are more than the sum of our individual contributions.
Fair
We strive for mutual benefit and a just allocation of risk and reward in our ventures. We openly work with brands, seeking to learn more about their work and programs, as we know first hand that aiming for safe and sustainable products is anything but easy.
Respectful
We seek to understand and appreciate difference and seek consensus in the face of disagreement.
How do our values inform our methods?
We provide expert perspectives that avoid conflicts of interest. And our business model isn’t designed to promote unnecessary consumption.
We connect better individual choices with advocacy to drive systemic change since we know purchases without policy are not enough.
And we work with, rather than against companies - even when we choose to avoid the products they make or sell.
At the end of the day just because we don’t recommend a company today, doesn’t mean we won’t in the future.
We know that some companies want to do what’s right but they may just not know how.
We know because we've been the ones responding to those customer inquiries in our previous roles as safety and sustainability professionals ourselves.
